Tsushima Ocean Knife born from Tsushima’s Marine Debris
Musashi's vision of the future

The Reality of Marine Debris
DebrisEstimated marine plastic debris reached 8 million tons and continues to flow into the ocean yearly.According to the 2010 data from Science magazine, the cumulative total ocean waste has risen to 150 million tons by now. This data is already quite old, and the current volume is estimated to be considerably higher than this.
Musashi's Product Concept
Musashi‘s product concept is to create non-discardable products from discarded plastic. As a concrete means of achieving this, we have attempted to take plastic washed ashore as marine debris and transform it into beautiful artifacts and utility products.

Our main activities are to promote awareness and clean up beaches to solve the marine debris problem. Our prioritized activity has been a volunteer activity called beach cleanup. However, even after cleaning the beach, debris keeps re-drifting and cannot beremedied.

We are now investing about 280 million yen annually to collect and process the waste, but we can collect only about 8,000 m3 per year, compared to 20,000 to 30,000 m3. I have two children, ages 9 and 6, but they cannot play innocently in the beautiful ocean like we experienced when we were little. I let my daughter and son play in the ocean, but they can only play in the midst of massive amounts of trash and microplastics.
