Love this knife! Beautiful! It comes with a decent edge but with after sharpening on stones it cuts fish so well. it also easily push cuts newspaper effortlessly when tested! I have no more issues make clean cuts of sashimi and sushi. After using this Yanagiba i realize just how inadequate a European meat slicer is for slicing fish.
I sharpened it once and have used it six times now and there is no loss in edge performance. I think the blue steel will keep and edge well and definitely lessen the number of times i have to sharpen this knife.

First good knife I ever dared to buy, most likely not the last.
The out of the box knife was sharper than any I've ever held in my hand.
For the first 2 weeks i couldn't stop cooking because I just wanted to cut, chop and slice everything in my kitchen - that's how satisfying of an experience it is.
But Musashi manages to make it so much more than just a knife. The experience altogether is just premium. I don't know if it is their quality, their attention to detail, their branding or everything together, but they delivered above and beyond.
I waited with this review so I could test the Knife and get comfortable with it.
Out of the box if you really squint and look closely, there were some weird stain-like patterns on the blade (and no, It's not the beautiful Hamon and Heat Treatment patterns you see in the picture) But it wasn't bad.
What I also noticed is that overnight, after the first use - even though I washed and wiped the knife after using it - it had dark spots along the cutting edge of the blade on both sides. These are, as I have later learned, not stains, but patina - a really thin layer of rust that builds up really quickly on high carbon blades and should be removed regularly, probably once every 1-2 weeks - .
They do mention that this steel is prone to rust and patina, so I can't say i wasn't warned.
After more than a month of using it - maybe not daily, but once every other day - I finally noticed that it's weight alone isn't enough to slice through the vegetables anymore, I finally need to also give it a little pressure to start cutting. It's flawless out of the box sharpness lasted longer than expected. I am yet to give the whetstone a try and sharpen the blade.
I would recommend buying a rust eraser together with this knife because it will accumulate some of that patina quickly.
I don't know if I should have bought the rust eraser instead of the wooden sheath / casing.
