砥石

「砥石で刃物を研ぐ」ということは、当たり前の行為のようにも思える。しかし、これは「当たり前」ではない。なぜなら、良質の砥石に恵まれた地域は地球上で多く存在するわけではないからだ。大陸プレートの境目にある日本では、本来なら地底深くにある岩石が地上に露出している。刃物を研ぐことができるくらいの細かい目を持った石である。これがあれば、ブレード自体を硬くしても十分に研磨できる。日本の地理条件があればこそ、硬度に優れた日本刀が誕生したと言っても過言ではない。
